Unit 3: Byzantine Empire
Unit 3 analyzes the split between the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire (known as Byzantium or the Byzantine Empire). We discuss the role of Christianity and the church in context of the split of the empire, the importance of historical figures such as Justinian and Constantine, and delve into some of the culture of the times. This unit takes up where Africa and the religions unit left off, and sets the stage for talking about Medieval Europe (after the Western Roman Empire has fallen, plunging Europe into the "Dark Ages").
